Coupland VFD adds new foam unit to equipment with grant from Texas A&M Forest Service

COUPLAND, Texas – With the most recent addition to Coupland Volunteer Fire Department’s emergency equipment, a new slip-on unit purchased with help from a grant administered by the Texas A&M Forest Service,  the department will have several new capabilities.

CVFD received a grant in the amount of $26,775 from TFS to help pay for the new slip-on unit. “We were in need of a better skid unit than what we had, and we did not have access to a CAF unit within our department,” CVFD Fire Chief Tracy Gardner said. “Just having the compressed air foam already this year has been amazing.”

TFS passes approximately $12.8 million along to volunteer fire departments across the state every year, helping them purchase equipment to better protect lives and property.

Regional Fire Coordinator Mark Wobus said CVFD is a department that takes great pride in themselves and their work, and that the new equipment will go to good use.  “This unit will be replacing an older unit on a cab chassis that they are keeping,” Wobus said. “It will increase their capabilities by going from just a water unit to having a unit that produces foam. It will increase their firefighting abilities tremendously by helping them knock out fires faster and keep them out.”

Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Jury Scam

From the Office of Williamson County Commissioner Ron Morrison, Precinct 4 on July 15, 2014:

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a number of recent incidents in the county where citizens have received calls from one or more individuals posing as an officer with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and telling them that a warrant is being issued on them for failure to appear for jury duty.

In several of the reported incidents, an individual claiming to be an officer, or individual representing the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, tells the called party that they can take care of the warrant by having them give payment over the phone in the form of a “Green Dot” or prepaid cards.

Investigative analysis indicates this same Jury Scam has been occurring throughout the US over the past several months. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office does not solicit payments or confirm any payments over the phone for any warrants, fines or citations. Do not give any payment information over the phone to anyone claiming they are a law enforcement or warrant officer from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

This is a continuing open investigation. Questions or complaints can be referred to Detective Dubielak, Williamson County Sheriff’s Office – Criminal Investigation Division (24-7) at 512-943-5242.

City Council Meeting Highlights for July 10, 2014

In one of the longest meetings of the Coupland City Council so far, a variety of issues were covered including a dangerous dog, a revision of the budget, the Prinz Estates, a potential dam failure, mowing of city right-of-way, and the November election.

Present for this meeting were Mayor Jack Piper and the following Aldermen: Barbara Piper, Susan Garry, and Karen Marosko. Three citizens and a special presenter attended the meeting.

Mayor Piper opened the meeting by explaining that there was no quorum for the June 12 meeting because the quorum count is based on the number of Aldermen present and that the Mayor does not count for the purpose of determining a quorum. He said that the action items on the June 12 agenda that required approval of the Council must be reconsidered in this meeting. These items were approval of the minutes from the May 8 meeting and a budget revision.

The Mayor reported that the City has $36,310 in the bank as of June 30. He also summarized a report on the status of revenue and expenses at this point in the fiscal year. Total revenue so far is $47,585. Expenses totaled $13,913.
