Countywide Voting Centers Coming to Williamson County

From the Williamson County Public Information Office:Wilco

STATE APPROVES APPLICATION FOR VOTE CENTERS

July 29, 2013 (Williamson County, TX) – The Texas Secretary of State’s Office approved Williamson County’s application to participate in the Countywide Polling Place program for the November 5, 2013, Constitutional Amendment Election. The program will eliminate county election precinct polling places and establish countywide polling places or Vote Centers so that voters can go to any voting location on Election Day. The program was successfully used for the May election and already has been implemented successfully in Travis County.

Vote Centers are all electronic so that voters can access any ballot style at any of the Vote Center locations. The Vote Center concept is similar to Early Voting in which all voting is electronic and voters can vote at any polling location. Currently, approximately 65 percent of Williamson County voters participate in early voting.

Paper ballots will still be available through Ballot by Mail for qualified voters. Registered voters who are 65 years or older, disabled, out of the county on Election Day and the entire period of early voting can request a Ballot by Mail. Voters can apply for Ballot by Mail starting Friday, September 6, 2013, and applications must be received by the Elections Office by Friday, October 25, 2013. All voters requesting mail ballots must return their marked ballots via the USPS or contract carrier (FedEx, DHL, etc.).

The last day to register to vote in the November 5 election is Monday, October 7, 2013. Early voting begins on Monday, October 21, 2013, until Friday, November 1, 2013.

More information is available on the County’s Elections website at www.wilco.org/elections.

A Reminder to Keep Looking Up!

As I write this, a wonderful thunderstorm has just passed through Coupland. My granddaughter slept through the whole thing! Amazing. I haven’t see the rain gauge but I’m confident that it topped 1 inch and I’m hoping for more.

Now, with our rain-cleared air, the next few days will be a good time to catch some shooting stars (a.k.a. meteors). This is just about the best time of year for meteors. Check out this Sky & Telescope article (Catch a Shooting Star) about  the Delta Aquariid meteors and the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks around August 12 and is my personal favorite. Whenever possible, I try to arrange to observe it from Garner State Park

If you are new to skywatching, the Sky & Telescope article, which is short but has lots of links for more information, will tell you everything you need to know to get the most out of the experience.

Last year, gazing up from our back yard, we saw dozens of beautiful meteors on the peak night of the Perseids. The kids won’t be back in school yet so make it a family event they won’t soon forget. And even though we always need more rain, there is no shame in praying for clear skies and some stellar inspiration from time to time!

This Week at St. Peter’s Church of Coupland – Christmas in July

From Pastor Frank Dietz:IMG_3833

“We will observe CHRISTMAS IN JULY at St. Peter’s on July 28!. An array of images and Christmas music will give us the “feel” of a “Christmas down under.” Pausing for such an excursion 6 months out allows for much more of the CONTENT of Christmas to be explored without some of the destractions of the retailers and marketeers. Wear green or red. Bring the socks and undies for the tree that supplies help for needy young school aged kids along with peanut butter and beans (canned and dry) for the Taylor pantry outreach.”
