Non-toxic Household Cleaning is the Topic of the Civic Organization Meeting on Monday

The Coupland Civic Organization will meet on Monday, September 30, in the Coupland Fire Station. Tanya Suchomel will discuss using non-toxic chemicals in the home. Come for refreshments at 6:30 PM. The program will begin at 7 PM.

Tanya says, “I will talk about toxic chemicals in products we use everyday in our homes that we think are safe.” If you are wondering why this is important to her, listen to her own words:

For several years I have helped to educate others about toxic chemicals inside our homes that most people aren’t aware of. I came to this realization when our youngest son became very ill at age 11 and was suffering a slow death due to chemical toxicity. He is almost 25 years old now, and much, much healthier. We had to make a life or death decision to ‘go green’ with everyday consumables in our home. I found a very affordable way to do that.

One of the best reasons to go non-toxic: Let the kids help!

Tanya’s program will include a video, handout material, and question and answer session.

Cooking Class Was a Scrumptious Success

Submitted by Barbara Piper

Sixteen individuals along with several assistants gathered in the lovely home of Cole Barton and Nicole Kertis to observe, participate and enjoy the latest Civic Organization’s Cooking Class.

Peter Wabbel continues to do a fantastic job of varying menus for each class and this class was definitely no exception.  Since the prep work is very lengthy, Peter normally does most of the prep work prior to the class but does demonstrate what each course entails.

Peter started the evening with tips on preparing his whole wheat pizza dough.  Individual pizzas were made and grilled.  Did you know that one can mix all of the ingredients and top the pizza immediately rather than layering? Texas salad greens with delicious blackberry vinaigrette was also served during the first course.

His chilled yellow pepper soup garnished with scallop cerviche verde was absolutely tasty as well as beautifully presented.  And yes, the lime juice used to marinate the scallops does actually cook them!  Great treat!

Grilled lamb was featured for the next course.  It was grilled to perfection and served with a duet of port wine and goat cheese cream sauce.  Yum!  The tomato ragout was a perfect compliment for the lamb as well as the garlic herbed couscous.  Of course, portions are always ample (just ask Carolyn from Round Rock, who always brings a to-go container with her).

The final course was beautifully displayed fried ice cream served on a bed of dried cranberry sauce, swirled with a sour cream and whipping cream.  The fried ice cream was scrumptious!

Peter is always ably assisted by his wife, Ruby.  Other board members, their spouses, and Cole’s parents assisted during this class.  Nicole especially enjoyed swirling the sauces on the desert plate for Peter’s fried ice cream presentation.  It was truly a remarkable evening!

National Night Out Was a Hit!

National Night Out took place on August 6 at the Coupland Depot and was very well attended, despite the early August heat. Shade and a good breeze goes a long way when temperatures hover around 100 degrees.

After a period of greeting old friends an making new ones, Barbara Piper, President of the Coupland Civic Organization, introduced a few folks who took a little time to share news and information and otherwise reach out to the good people of Coupland.

IMG_4169Deputy Matt Kreidel, of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, spoke about security and preventing fraud. He reminded people to lock their homes and vehicles and to clear their mailboxes. He talked about email scams on Craigslist and suggested that instead of using debit cards in public (like at a restaurant) you should consider using prepaid credit cards. He mentioned the grandparent help scam, where people call grandma, pretending to be a grandchild in trouble, and get the hapless elder to wire money to them. These scammers often get personal information from Facebook and other social media and make excuses for why they don’t sound like themselves.

County Commissioner Ron Morrison (4th precinct) said, he could have gone to other places for National Night Out but that he had a warm spot in his heart for Coupland because he got 75 percent of the vote in Coupland in the last election. He got a good response when he went on to say, “You’re not the largest city in my precinct but you’re the newest.”

Morrison chimed in on the security theme. He said he used to be a used car salesman and he knows how car sales are done. He said that if you are selling a car on Craigslist, make sure you meet the potential buyers in a public place.

Pete Correa, Commissioner Morrison’s Executive Assistant, attended the event but did not speak.

IMG_4172Coupland Fire Chief, Tracy Gardner, spoke about people burning trash and brush. He said that if someone complains about a fire, such as when smoke is blowing into people’s homes, the fire department must put it out. He said that they also have to put out controlled burns if they can’t find the land owner.

The Coupland Fire Department rolled out a few fire trucks, to the delight of all the kids at the event.

IMG_4173Jerry and Arlene Kaufman, volunteers from the Victim Assistance Unit of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, spoke about their work. Jerry described themselves as “first responders for emotional support.” He said they provide emotional support at a crime scene so law enforcement personnel can do their job. He reported that they have 40 volunteers on the team and that they may be called out by the Sheriff’s office, fire departments, or municipal police.

Kaufman said they always need new volunteers and that volunteers usually work only one day per week. Click on their Williamson County Victim Assistance Unit website page for more information.

Food for the event was provided by the Civic Organization. Becky Sutton made the delicious chili, which nicely complemented the grilled hot dogs. Several folks baked cookies.

Choo Choo Fest a Huge Success!

Coupland’s Choo Choo Fest, the fundraiser to restore the caboose, was a great success, raising over $5,800.

The Coupland Civic Organization (CCO) and the Old Coupland Inn and Dancehall co-sponsored Choo Choo Fest. Thanks to Barbara and Tim Worthy, owners of the Inn and Dancehall, who donated the barbecue dinner, with potato salad, coleslaw, beans, and iced tea.

The Worthys, assisted by CCO members, served an estimated 200 meals. Sodas and bottled water were sold separately, under the direction of Cole Barton.

The bake sale, managed by Ruby Wabbel and Dottie Hahn, gathered a huge amount of baked goods, which sold out.

The silent auction, organized by Becky Sutton and Dottie Hahn, also was a big success, with about 20 tables of items, which included fine art prints, arts and crafts, handmade goods, services, dining coupons, garden items, décor, toys, and more. CCO directors and their families pitched in to help serve the dinner and drinks and to operate the bake sale and silent auction.

The Dancehall provided music throughout the afternoon, both recorded and live band performances. The planned line dance contest did not take place; the person who was to direct it was unable to attend due to illness.

CCO President Barbara Piper says, “The CCO would like to offer a huge thank you to Tim and Barbara Worthy, owners of the Coupland Inn and Dancehall for their enormous contributions to Choo Choo Fest 2013. We would like to thank the Elgin Courier, the Taylor Chamber of Commerce, and the Taylor Daily Press for publicizing Choo Choo Fest.” She adds, “A big thank you also goes to Wright Distributing for the great banners; Jody Krankel, Ella Jez, and Jennifer Dollins for forwarding information about our benefit to their email lists, and to KOKE for adding our fundraising effort to their website.”

Coupland’s Choo Choo Fest on August 11 – Fundraiser to Restore Historic Caboose

On Sunday, August 11, beginning at noon, the Coupland Civic Organization (CCO) will partner with Barbara and Tim Worthy, owners of the Old Coupland Inn and Dancehall, to hold a fundraiser for the restoration of the CCO’s historic caboose, which sits between the Old Coupland Inn and the Coupland Depot.  Choo Choo Fest will be held in the beautiful Inn and Dancehall building.IMG_4174

A barbecue meal will be served beginning at noon and will include delicious barbecue from the Inn and homemade beans, potato salad, and coleslaw.  The meal will include iced tea.  Meals will be offered for donations, minimum $8.  Soft drinks, bottled water, and beer will be offered separately.

A bake sale will offer homemade desserts whole or by the serving.  There will be a silent auction with new and collectible items and services being auctioned off.

For your listening and dancing pleasure, Choo Choo Fest will feature live music.  Bands will include Finger Pistol,  classic country from Austin; the Collin Brook Huntley Band, Georgetown; Zach Willard and Country Road Band, Leander; and the 24/7 Band, rock/Southern rock/country from Austin and Victoria.  The 24/7 Band features the Vallejo nephews and was voted top ten nationwide in the 18 and under age group.

A Fest highlight will be the line dance contest, which will be held in the Coupland Dancehall from 2 to 4 p.m.  Dancehall owner Barbara Worthy says, “Attention all line dancers!  We will sponsor a team and individual line dance contest; prizes will be awarded for first to fifth place and all ages are welcomed.  Teams will be voted on for originality and skill.  Teens, get your friends and family together to vote for you.”

The first Choo Choo Fest was held back in 2008, with proceeds going to repair Coupland’s historic Depot.  Now, the Depot is beautifully restored, and Coupland is turning its attention to restoring the caboose.  The Depot and caboose are owned by the CCO, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Barbara & Tim Worthy want to see great things happen in Coupland and are enthusiastic supporters of the Coupland Civic Organization.

This Choo Choo Fest is co-sponsored by the CCO and the Old Coupland Inn and Dancehall.  We invite everyone to come and have a fun day of food, music, and dancing and contribute to the worthy cause of saving Coupland’s historic caboose.

CCO President Barbara Piper says, “This is definitely a relic that visitors enjoy and pose for pictures in front of and on the steps.  These large and heavy railroad cars were once the last thing one would see when a train passed by.  Many of us especially enjoyed waving to the guy perched high in the back of the caboose.  Those days are gone, but we do have the chance to preserve this piece of history and bring it back to its original stature!”

Caboose Restoration Takes Baby Steps

IMG_3635

Late this morning, I spoke with Rosie Hanes of Robert Hanes construction. They are replacing the wood on the steps and the platform of the historic caboose, which sits by the Coupland Depot Museum. She expects that the new material will be installed today and painted tomorrow.

This is Phase One of the restoration, which was necessary for reasons of safety since so many people were standing on the caboose for portraits.

If you want to help make the complete restoration happen, plan to attend Choo-choo Fest 2013 on August 11 at the Old Coupland Dancehall & Tavern! Get more information on the Coupland Civic Organization website.
